Prof. Marwan Awartani : Member

Mr. Awartani, a Professor of Mathematics at Birzeit University has held professional interest and made innovator contributions in a number of areas including mathematics, mathematics education, curriculum development, educational reform, university business links, science and technology planning and monitoring and evaluation. Prof. Awartani was the founding President of the Palestinian Society for Mathematical Sciences, the founding Chairman of the Palestinian Mathematical Olympiad, a founding member of the Palestine Academy for Science & Technology, and co-founder of the Network of Palestinian Scientists and Technologists Abroad. He has been Chief Advisor for Science and Technology in the Palestinian Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation, Director of the National Science and Technology Policy Project, and Chairman of the National UNESCO Committee on Science.

Prof. Awartani chaired the national mathematics curriculum reform committee and was cofounder of Al-Mustaqbal (“Future”) School in Ramallah. He served as the Chairman of the Academic Board and Managing Director of the Al-Mustaqbal Educational Corporation.

In addition, Prof. Awartani is Co-founder and chairman of Alpha International for Research, Polling and Informatics which focuses primarily on survey research, data management and monitoring and evaluation, by using a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods. Prof. Awartani has been a consultant in areas as diverse as intellectual property rights, incubators and science parks, evaluation, capacity-building, technology transfer, and secondary and higher education. He consulted for several international organizations including the EU, USAID, UNDP, and UNESCO.

Prof. Awartani serves on the Board of Teacher Creativity Center and the Advisory Board of Middle East Young Leaders Program and has been recently nominated as a senior advisor to MIT’s Middle East Science and Technology Initiative.
